Player Owned Houses - which location?

Many people have said how they would like to have many RuneScape houses to take advtange of each of their locations but alas that is not possible. Have no fear, as I will take you on a journey through all the current locations in RuneScape comparing their useful attributes to each other.

The list of house locations according to the required Construction level is:

  • Rimmington (1)

  • Taverly (10)

  • Pollnivneach (20)

  • Rellekka (30)
  • Brimhaven (40)
  • Yanille (50)

The interior of each house can be the same as long as you have the same level, so I'm assuming that you have all the useful stuff built in your house that someone with level 56 Construction can make (50 + Crystal Saw + tea). If you like you can come visit my house at some point to see what I've done with the place. The point of this editorial is simple: Location, location, location!

I'll look at all the good things about a house, everything left out automatically means bad. Theres a brief summary towards the end.

Rimmington
A general store is useful for unnoting your planks without a butler, but be careful that noone steals them. The range shop is also useful to fetch a bow and a few arrows for a game of darts. With the crafting guild nearby you can easily mine clay for free, make it soft and use for construction levelling. Although this is not fast at all, it is still free. If you're into the making of Redberry Pies, you'll find the nearby bush patch useful as well.

Sad to say, this is about it. Not a whole lot to do here, but you may find people trading construction materials outside. If you are still a low leveled constructor, this place has a lot in the area to make you level up for free, but it'll be slow.

Teleportation wise, your choices are limited at best:

  • If you've completed "An Enlightened Journey" and happened to find the axe in the house north of the Witch, there is a choice of Yew, Willow Oak and regular trees to take a balloon ride north of the Crafting guild.
  • Port Sarim (requires some cash) is nearby for a lot of boat rides.
  • And finally, way south is a fairy ring.

Taverley
I used to have my house here for quite a while. There is not a lot to do at all, but everything is closeby. One of those things is of course the Heroes Guild where you can recharge your Glory amulets. The teleport section is going to be a good one, though, with all these teleport hubs nearby.

Teleporting to AND from here can be done via Glider, Balloon and Dwarven Cart, but the Balloon requires you to have an axe. If you DO have an axe and have a high Farming level then you can plant your own Yew or even Magic tree here. Added to the choice of Willow, Oak and regular trees and you got yourself a good teleport hub. The same hub principles apply for the Dwarven Cart (Dorges-Khaan, Keldagrim, Dwarven mines) and ofcourse the Glider. Added to that, Catherby is pretty close with its Charter Ships hub.

Pollinivneach
I haven't found any reason why to keep your house permanently located here. Other then being a frequent flyer on the Carpets for various reasons, I can't think of anything you'll want to have your house here. You may wish to use it here as a quick stop to do some more camping out at the Dust Devils, but other then that, no.

Teleports here are few. Carpet rides from here go to Sophanem, Menaphos, Nardah, and Shantay pass. The Menaphos ride might become useful in the future when we finally get access to that (port?) city, but besides that your options are limited. For everything here you need money, even to be able to survive, unless you happen to always carry your waterskins with you. I should probably mention the camels here, because they can recharge your Camulet.

Rellekka
Now we're getting there. This is in my opinion the best possible location for your POH. Not only can you get tons of stuff from the area, there are also 2 quick teleports to your house, other then the House teleport. First the stuff you can make out of things in the area:

  • Cabbage and Onion

  • Tomato from Miscellania

  • Bronze axe (respawn near Hobgoblins) and Iron Pickaxe (dropped by people killing Rockcrabs)

  • Meat (Cow, Chicken and Bear)

  • Cream and Butter (churning milk)
  • Seaweed and Sand

The stuff you can do with it in the area is amazing ofcourse:

  1. The foods you can make are so diverse, i'll actually mention them to astound you: Egg and Tomato, Meat Pie, Mud Pie (get compost from your Leprechaun), Garden Pie, Redberry Pie (with Redberry bush planted in Etceteria), Fish Pie, Admirals Pie, Cream, Egg Potato, Buttered potato, Cheese Potato, Plain Pizza, Anchovie Pizza, Meat Pizza and Stews. This is ofcourse apart from all the stuff you can make already in your house (Cakes, Fried Onions, Scrambled Eggs, etc).
  2. Seaweed and Sand can be used to craft all kinds of glass items.
  3. The mines at Jatiszo and Neitiznot as well as the mines in the area can get you all but Gold Ore. Making it possible to smelt and smith nearly everything in this area.
  4. The feathers and logs and ores in the area make for a fine collection of darts knives and arrows for the Darts minigame in your house.
  5. I'm sure there's a lot more you can do (silver crafting jumps to mind). Just have a look at what your POH has and what you have outside.

Teleport wise this is an excellent location. The Rellekkan Lyre drops you within sight of your POH portal, so if you have 6 portals in your house, even Ancient magiks don't hinder your teleportations. But Lunar is even better; Destroy your Seal of Passage, Home Port to Lunar Isle, talk to anyone around, and voila, you find yourself 2 clicks away from your house (yes I'm permanently on Lunar spells now). This basically means FREE teleport to nearly anywhere I want to. With the new teleportation jewelry out, you can get pretty much anywhere when you glory to Edgeville, not to mention the Fairy Rings.

Brimhaven
It's going to be hard to top the Rellekkan Location, but I'll try to find all the positive aspects. The things to do here are limited, but getting yourself wasted on grog is always fun. Other then that you can mine Gold in the area a lot, as well as pick Pineapples up for composting needs. People who do a lot of Metal Dragon, Red Dragon, Greater Demon, Fire Giant, Moss Giant and perhaps even Wild Dog slaying will probably have their house here.

Teleportation wise there is not a lot here. The cart to Shilo is nearby (rendered obsolete if you have completed the Karamja Achievement Diary), as well as the docks to Ardougne and any Charter location that can free up a portal in your house. If you have the Farming level, you may have planted your own Spirit tree here. Other then that, you'll have to walk.

Yanille
Little to do out here, but you can farm yourself some hops and buy some supplies you don't have in your house. You can also have Bert send your daily 84 sand to your bank. The Magic Guild and Anvils are probably an attraction, besides the main one: a Bank. This place is really close to a bank. If you wish to level your construction cheaply, you'll gather the raw materials first and then level up in Yanille. Afterall, the bank is only 3 clicks away.

Teleport wise again not a lot of options over a normal POH in Rimmington, save one; here you do not need a portal to Yanille so you can free it up for something else. The Mage guild teleports are closeby and with a little walking you can reach Khazard Charter ships.

In summary:

  • Rimmington, usefulness: 2/5, teleportation: 2/5, easy to reach: 1/5

  • Taverly, usefulness: 1/5, teleportation: 4/5, easy to reach: 2/5

  • Pollnivneach, usefulness: 1/5, teleportation: 1/5, easy to reach: 1/5

  • Rellekka, usefulness: 4/5, teleportation: 3/5, easy to reach: 5/5

  • Brimhaven, usefulness: 2/5, teleportation: 2/5, easy to reach: 2/5

  • Yanille, usefulness: 3/5, teleportation: 3/5, easy to reach: 1/5

Usefulness: What can you use in the area (for whatever purpose).
Teleportation: What other teleports does the area have to offer.
Easy to reach: How easy is your house to reach without using House tele- tabs/ports.

I hope this has helped you to decide where to put your housein RuneScape. Perhaps I might see you in game and feel free to visit my house.

Very nice article, I'd experimented with house locations on my own but I'd never thought of using lunar home port to get to your house.

Thanks for the article.

The main consideration for me in placing my house is speed of levelling construction. I do it quite cheaply by cutting my own oak logs and having my butler take them to the sawmill. I haven't investigated all the locations, but Rimmington seems the best as there are three oak trees a short way north of the portal.

The focus on teleportation is probably only useful for people who use a spellbook different from the default, i.e. without the Home Teleport spell. Also, Home Teletabs may be an option.

Although not quite sure if I may ever use POHs for the reasons above-I do use for other reasons-I did learn 3 or 4 new things to do in my POH.

Personally, I really think you've underestimated the Yanille portal. For usefulness, you forgot to mention the hunting area nearby, easy to access Chompy hunting grounds, its very close to Castle Wars, and because it is close to the bank, its perfect for a Gilded Altar (and if you're a cheap prayer guy, the ogres (big bones) can give some good xp if combined with your altar).

For teleportation, there's the Mage Guild which offers teleports to the Dark Wiz Tower, the Wizard's Tower, and... (one or two other places that I'm not sure of). It also isn't all that far away from the Tree Gnome Village.

In my opinion, it is also easiest to reach. It's very close to the Watchtower teleport (if you use the Enchanted Lyre which requires completion of Fremmy Trails, I see no reason for excluding this). It is also very close to CW (dueling ring) which anyone can use. And finally it can also be fairly easily reached from Port Kazahrad (Charter Ships).

Yanille is indeed easy to reach. Another thing is that it's quite close to a fairy ring, which I think is very comfortable. That, and the bank is my reason to keep my house in Yanille.

Very nicely laid out article. However, my house is in Rimmington and will stay there unless I ever do a lot of construction, when I will move it to Yannile. A benefit of having your house in Rimmington is being close to the hobgoblin peninsula. There are fast(10 secs) snape grass spawns there, as well as limpwurt roots to be had from killing the hobgoblins. You can also farm white berries in the patch near there. So if you want to raise your herblore without paying a ton for seconds, Rimmington is the place for you!

Heh, I don't really think on usefulness. The main "House party" server is world 6, Rimmington portal. I often spend time there either at other peoples houses, or hosting a party in my own. So mine will stay there Razz

Great article, but a few things I think you missed:

-The delay ("There's no place like home..." with music appropriate to the house exterior style) in entering a house portal or teleporting to your POH by the home teletabs need to be considered when choosing a location. If teleports to the area by other means, such as Rellekka, are cheaper and quicker, then I generally don't use that location.

-Frenita's cooking store in Yanille. Before everyone yowls, "What about the Culinomancer's Chest?" may I point out I go there to churn butter, buy flour, buy pie tins, buy potatoes, etc. for mass pie-making and tuna taters when I have exhausted the chest's stock of those items. The Yanille butter churn is the closest to a bank.

-As others have said, both the Hunting store and the nearby fairy ring make this an ideal place to begin training Hunter, especially if you store Hunter gear in your Costume Room. As Edarkness pointed out, the teleports in the second floor of the Magic Guild are also worth considering.

Ultimately, both article and comments considered, it is a matter of personal preference where you locate your POH.

Interesting article, I learned some new things from it.

I'd say Relleka the best spot while your levels are still on the low side. But once you train them up, I'd go for Yanille. For the reasons other people have brought up and another one: blue dragon slaying.

To me personally, my house is just a teleportation hub while on lunars. I can get nearly anywhere with some laws, astrals, a mud staff and a few house tabs. I have my house in Yanille so I can have all portals in two portal rooms (no need for watch tower portal anymore).
Even when you can use the level 96 spell "spellbook swap", I think Yanile is still the best house spot. Throwing a house tab on the ground is still a faster way to get to Yanille than using watch tower teleport. And the other spots are either easy to reach in other ways or not really usefull anyway.

Jaklumen: Ultimately, both article and comments considered, it is a matter of personal preference where you locate your POH.

Those are my thoughts exactly. Now, I am in no way whatsoever saying you can't write articles on your preferences, and I am not saying that you expect us to follow them, but it ultimately comes down to preference. Some people may let these reasons affect their preferences, but it isn't a matter of "that one is better."
